5:50AM, Pops awakens, throws on some shorts, shoes, sweatshirt and Fiat America touring cap, removes the top and fires up the yellow '86 X. Barreling down El Dorado St., he heads south toward the Crosstown Freeway. He roars past the Police Station (no sign of Barn or Ange), hangs a left at Crosstown entrance and he's off to the races. Accelerating to 80 mph, he heads west and then takes the not too sharp curve of the onramp at 80 to Hi-Way 99 south (toward Fresno, "Gateway to Bakersfield") and accelerates to 90 mph (4300rpm). Cool, beautiful morning with the Sierra Nevada foothills plainly visible to the east and Mount Diablo to the west. The X is running like 10 of 'em, not too many folks up this early today so up to 4800 rpm and an indicated 100. Keeping it between 90 and 100 all the way to the Modesto exit and then cruising on into doughnut shop. Painstakingly (but lovingly) selecting their wares, he pays for his purchase and the ladyclerk tells him to drive safely, especially if he's driving on the Hi-Way. He looks back at her with a funny, somewhat fiendish look. She backs uneasily away.
Depositing the precious cargo on the passenger side floor of the X, it's back on Hi-Way 99. Feeling unusually lucky, he guns it up to 100 again and then puts the pedal to the floor. At 5100 rpm and 106, the oleander bushes in the center divide are resembling the colorful sequence toward the end of "2001: A Space Oddysey". He slows down to 85, taking in the colorful billboards along the route. He sees the one advertising the "Moaning Cavern" out on Hi-Way 4 and thinks of an old girlfriend... back to the business at hand! Up to 100 again! Takes the sweeping curve of an on-ramp to the Crosstown and off on El Dorado. Drives meekly past the Police station (there must be an APB out by now!) and the X purrs into the driveway.
Grabbing his sugary prize, he walks up the walk toward the front door, and then turns. He gazes longingly back at the yellow X for a few moments, looks up at the sky and shouts two words for all of his bemused and befuddled neighbors to hear:... Woooo- Hoooo!!!!!!! <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I too, know the feeling!
I jumped into my son's brand new Subaru WRX 270 hp turbo, intercooled, all wheel drive BLACK on BLACK wagon yesterday and ran around the mountains here with one stretch showing above 120 indicated... It revs to 7300 INSTANTLY and then the rev-limiter noses the car over.
It actually snaps your neck upon accelerating and NEVER spins a tire... starting, stopping or cornering. I have no IDEA what its limits are and frankly, don't think I have the courage to find them.
I blew away a 328 Bimmer on a 1 mile straight and lost him in the twisties for good. When I reached another straight 3 miles away I made sure I was turned around heading back before our paths crossed again. He was FLABBERGASTED and probably had no IDEA what I was driving!
But the top doesn't come off... It really makes no sound at all... and is NO FUN TO DRIVE at 35 mph.
I think I'll keep the X... I probably could buy 27 X's for that one Subaru!

This car, on the other hand... looks like one engineer wasn't talking to the other... except in the drivetrain department.
It took my son 8 weeks to get the car and he paid sticker for it... less the options they "forgot" order. He's still waiting for those and he'll get them at cost.
Let me restate and reinforce what I said though... Ya might as well drive a Civic around town... It is a virtual rocket though... and its nice ta know "ya could, if ya wanted to".
I just can't hardly stand to look at it!!!! HA! Its not pretty even with some larger aftermarket wheels and tires... he's gonna knock it down a coupla inches and even with 300 miles on the clock... we're talking about adding a second turbo...

5:50AM, Pops awakens, throws on some shorts, shoes, sweatshirt and Fiat America touring cap, removes the top and fires up the yellow '86 X. Barreling down El Dorado St., he heads south toward the Crosstown Freeway. He roars past the Police Station (no sign of Barn or Ange), hangs a left at Crosstown entrance and he's off to the races. Accelerating to 80 mph, he heads west and then takes the not too sharp curve of the onramp at 80 to Hi-Way 99 south (toward Fresno, "Gateway to Bakersfield") and accelerates to 90 mph (4300rpm). Cool, beautiful morning with the Sierra Nevada foothills plainly visible to the east and Mount Diablo to the west. The X is running like 10 of 'em, not too many folks up this early today so up to 4800 rpm and an indicated 100. Keeping it between 90 and 100 all the way to the Modesto exit and then cruising on into doughnut shop. Painstakingly (but lovingly) selecting their wares, he pays for his purchase and the ladyclerk tells him to drive safely, especially if he's driving on the Hi-Way. He looks back at her with a funny, somewhat fiendish look. She backs uneasily away.
Depositing the precious cargo on the passenger side floor of the X, it's back on Hi-Way 99. Feeling unusually lucky, he guns it up to 100 again and then puts the pedal to the floor. At 5100 rpm and 106, the oleander bushes in the center divide are resembling the colorful sequence toward the end of "2001: A Space Oddysey". He slows down to 85, taking in the colorful billboards along the route. He sees the one advertising the "Moaning Cavern" out on Hi-Way 4 and thinks of an old girlfriend... back to the business at hand! Up to 100 again! Takes the sweeping curve of an on-ramp to the Crosstown and off on El Dorado. Drives meekly past the Police station (there must be an APB out by now!) and the X purrs into the driveway.
Grabbing his sugary prize, he walks up the walk toward the front door, and then turns. He gazes longingly back at the yellow X for a few moments, looks up at the sky and shouts two words for all of his bemused and befuddled neighbors to hear:... Woooo- Hoooo!!!!!!! <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I too, know the feeling!
I jumped into my son's brand new Subaru WRX 270 hp turbo, intercooled, all wheel drive BLACK on BLACK wagon yesterday and ran around the mountains here with one stretch showing above 120 indicated... It revs to 7300 INSTANTLY and then the rev-limiter noses the car over.
It actually snaps your neck upon accelerating and NEVER spins a tire... starting, stopping or cornering. I have no IDEA what its limits are and frankly, don't think I have the courage to find them.
I blew away a 328 Bimmer on a 1 mile straight and lost him in the twisties for good. When I reached another straight 3 miles away I made sure I was turned around heading back before our paths crossed again. He was FLABBERGASTED and probably had no IDEA what I was driving!
But the top doesn't come off... It really makes no sound at all... and is NO FUN TO DRIVE at 35 mph.
I think I'll keep the X... I probably could buy 27 X's for that one Subaru!

This car, on the other hand... looks like one engineer wasn't talking to the other... except in the drivetrain department.
It took my son 8 weeks to get the car and he paid sticker for it... less the options they "forgot" order. He's still waiting for those and he'll get them at cost.
Let me restate and reinforce what I said though... Ya might as well drive a Civic around town... It is a virtual rocket though... and its nice ta know "ya could, if ya wanted to".
I just can't hardly stand to look at it!!!! HA! Its not pretty even with some larger aftermarket wheels and tires... he's gonna knock it down a coupla inches and even with 300 miles on the clock... we're talking about adding a second turbo...
