The headlamps didn't come up until they were switched on, but no parks unless the key was shut off. I ran a switch in series with the brown wire on the parking lamp relay (Thanks Mac!) and now when switch is ON, normal operation. When the switch is OFF, I can run the parks while driving. The only downside is the headlights will raise and light when switched on, but the rest of the exterior lights go out unless the switch is returned to the ON position. Luckily the green lamp on the dash that indicates when the parking lights are on works as a reminder. Now my "euro" parking lights will be able to shine!

I tried wiring as per our original thread, and the headlights would just boink up and down at random. After 2 hours of test-lighting, this was the best compromise I could find. My car was stock, and parks were out if the ignition was on, unless the headlights were activated. I just needed a way to supply the parks with 12V when the ignition was on, not bypass the headlight motors. Wacky Italian electrics!

I still think, even though you have made an alternate solution, that you might still want to troubleshoot the system (when you find the time) to see if you can determine why the lights were acting screwy in the first place. You may have just patched power into the dead circuit, but the original fault (whatever it is) probably still exists.

I am in a similar situation right now with my '80. When I parked it to do the tranny rebuild, all electricals were working fine. Then it sat on jackstands for a couple of months while I did the tranny (working on it "here & there" took a relatively long time). By the time the tranny was done & the car came down, the headlights wouldn't work anymore!?

I could get the parks on the center position of the headlight switch as usual, but when I switch to the actual "headlight" position, everything goes out. Weird.

I have not had the free time to troubleshoot it yet, but I am suspecting it is a bad or loose connection somewhere in the headlight circuit ahead (?) of the switch. All the fuses are good. As a temporary "quick fix" I made a fat double-wire jumper & tapped the circuit into power straight from the ignition switch via existing wires at the fusebox. It worked, which tells me the original system is at least not grounding a hot wire, or it would have smoked my jumper...

It works - enough that I can drive it at night if necessary, but I have a big jumper wire dangling out from under the dash, and the actual fault has yet to be located. I just need to find the time, but we all know how that goes... -Mac.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hey Mac.

I have had a similar problem with the headlights on my '78. I was cruising along a mountain road about 11:00pm or so when all of a sudden BOTH my headlighs and parking lights went out ( luckily I was on a straight stretch! ). I pulled over and turned the headlight switch back to the center position and my parking light came back on.

I sat there for a while with my key chain maglite checking fuses and not finding anything wrong I finally got so frustrated with it I yanked down on the HI BEAM\LOW BEAM lever and my head lights came back on ( with switch back on headlight )!

It makes sense though. If the contacts on the low beam\high beam lever wear out it will not complete the circuit to the lights.

My "temporary" fix was to stick a penny inbetween the lever and the assembly that it is attatched to.

So, you might want to check that out, just wiggle the lever around to see if the lights come back on ( with out the jumper ).

Hope this helps,
Jason<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
