My question to you is. On my 83, the gear has a notch on the inside(engine side) of the gear. What the heck is this and is it to be aligned with anything? Also it has an arrow, pointing to the outer edge, on the outside of the gear. What is it supposed to be pointing at? I have the regular notch on the gear edge for timing, but it rather sucks to see(Paint helps). At first I wasn't even sure if it was a notch. Reason I ask is that I notice the X is getting really poor power and horrid fuel consumption. I replaced the belt last year and now it's spring an now driving it, I really notice it. The idle seems a bit high too. It runs like $%^$ if I adjust it lower. I have done this many times to my other X's, but this one has me stumped. I feel like such a newbie.

On your car the CAM timing mark is a notch on the inside of the gear and it should align with a pointer on the sheet metal that supports the belt cover. The CRANK pulley has a bit of a "bump" on it with a groove in the center of the bump. This should align with the largest (most clockwise) of the three arrows on the timing tab. This is TDC on #4. The ignition timing should be set to the 10 degree mark on the timing tab (most counterclockwise). Most injected X's will run a bit better yet with the timing a few degrees advanced from there. 10 degrees is stock, and it will run better at 14.
The aux air regulator could make it idle too fast if it were stuck open, but they usually stick closed and the car doesn't idle fast enough cold. Check the timing, and let us know what you find,

10 degrees is stock, and it will run better at 14.
The aux air regulator could make it idle too fast if it were stuck open, but they usually stick closed and the car doesn't idle fast enough cold. Check the timing, and let us know what you find,
