Tire Siping?.....

Was talking with a friend this weekend, and he was telling me that he had just bought a new set of tires for his car and at the recommendation of the shop he had them "siped" (sp?). Apparently this is a process where the tires a slit across the tread and is suppose to help with wet weather traction and also will enable the tires to run cooler...

I've never heard of this process, and I'm curious what others more knowledgeable think... I did a google search on "tire siping" and found many comments... about half declared it as total BS and the other half said it was the best thing since sliced bread... so that was no help.

Input appreciated...

Do it for you're truck or SUV where you want good snow stop and go traction.

NEVER......do it to a tire for you're X. Unless you think it needs to handle worse.

If it was such a good idea...

...I think the tires would come that way. Probably does no real harm but I bet it voids the manufacturer's warranty. So you're relying solely on the installer's warranty.

It's a great money maker for the installers I bet. Sort of like "lifetime" warranties and other add-ons.
