I am still 90% convinced.
When I ordered my synchros I mentioned the tendency of 1/2 hub wearing on 5-speeds. He said often it's the lubricant and alot of people put GL-5 or such in them.
I said I was planning on going with MTL or MT90. He said anything with anti-foaming agents in the oil was bad, and that the X tranny relies on some oil foaming to lubricate the lay shaft. He said they were in the middle of a holy-war on this subject on the Internet awhile back (I'd love to read that thread wherever it was).
Now I'm confused. I don't want to ever tear this tranny down again, and I don't like the sound of how GL-1 performs in the cold (I'm in Oregon).

I have been using it for several years and have had ZERO trouble with it. Redline MTL has out performed any other gear oil I have ever used. The 1st and 2nd hubs that I have seen worn out have frequently come from cars that were realatively low milage and still had the orginal GL-1 in them.
Don't know why you would want oil foaming for the lay shaft. Oil foaming traps heat, reduces flow, causes gauling of mated surfaces, and on and on. In either of the X1/9 gearboxes, the diff acts as a pump to pump oil from the bottom of the gearbox up and into a channel that directs oil flow over the gearset (lay shaft).
Nothing I have ever tried worked better in cold weather than MTL. I have used it in both my street car and race car for at least seven years.

At the very least, it should be as well drained as possible. Even better would be to switch the next time you tear down the transmission, so as to be going with all new seals & gaskets at the one time. I have heard some folks say that the Redline leaked from trannies that were just drained of GL1, but have not had this happen myself fwiw... -Mac.

Some folks prefer Redline MT-90 or MTL.
I say use whichever you feel good about using.
As for me, mine is full of MTL as well (thanks to Steve's testimonials) and it shifts & runs great, I have to admit. Doesn't leak a drop either, which was my other worry

At the very least, it should be as well drained as possible. Even better would be to switch the next time you tear down the transmission, so as to be going with all new seals & gaskets at the one time. I have heard some folks say that the Redline leaked from trannies that were just drained of GL1, but have not had this happen myself fwiw... -Mac.
