especially "pile o crap" and "empty trunk 1" you will see that the contents of these two images were once co located. No longer. The "pile o crap" which contains such things as metal plates, wood panels, fiberglass insulation, and a rubberized tablecloth-like material did not appear to be factory original.
I suspect strongly that the both the front and rear trunks had a rubber mat or the like inside. (I couldn't bear to take picture of the turqoise bath mat that is serving as the front trunk's mat now) So I leave you with a question:
What really goes in there?

Over this should sit a shaped metal plate that screws (with self-tappers) into the chassis rails.
On older cars this would have a ribbed rubber mat over it that is supposed to stop things sliding around.
If you were really lucky you would have a set of tailored luggage bags that sat neatly inside.
The front would have another shaped rubber mat (for older cars) or a luxurious plastic backed carpet shaped to the contours of the radiator cowling and sides of the compartment. This too, like the fibreglass insulation, is excellent at trapping water!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
