So...Thanks Steve.

About 1 month ago I wrote about how I couldn't get my crank shaft to fit in my engine, and it appeared my new thrust washers were too thick. Well it turns out they are too thick. But I am still a little puzzled.

As luck would have it, I found my old thrust washer (which I thought I had thrown away) and they measures out at .092 inches. (Yes I finally bought a dial caliper). My new ones measured out to .095 inches. (Which is still less than the .097 that steve ambrose measure on a used thrust washer).

So I put both old washers in and there was too much slop (endfloat) (not to mention one of the washers as scored and I wouldn't want to reuse it anyway). So I tried 1 new and 1 old washer and it fits well with no detectable endfloat. BTW is there a downside to not having endfloat as long as is is not binding? The specs for endfloat range from .002-.010. My smallest feeler gauge is .006, and the endfloat gap is less that that.

So back to the garage I go, and maybe I'll have this engine assembled today.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi Marvin, I'm afraid that the used thrust washer I measured was oversize!! The factory manual says .096 to .098 for the oversize and .091 to .093 for standard.
Very sorry about the confusion!
I suspect that you probably have the .002 minimum clearance. It would be hard to measure that small a clearance with a feeler gauge, a dial indicator would be best. If the washers and crank install without any force, then you have at least some clearance.
Good luck, and thanks for the update,
Steve<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
