the hardest part (for me) is removing the shims from the buckets, it seems that the oil film makes them stick to the bucket.

I don't know of any good method of changing shims without the tool, except for pulling the cam box.
I should point out that after measing all of the valve clearances, if I need to adjust the majority of the valves, I always pull the box. This is actually faster than trying to use the tool. Just note the clearances when you do your measurements, then pull the box, mic the shims, do the math, install all of the new shims and slap that puppy back together.

I start out by using a baster to squirt the excess oil from around the valve springs back into the engine, and cleaning the gasket contact area. Then install cam box with a new gasket, check clearances and do the math. Then pull cam box again being careful not to mess up the gasket, change shims, and slap it back together reusing the same gasket. Now you can add a little oil in the cam housing to help on restart.

Maybe my math is bad, or I'm too picky, but I never can get exactly the clearance specified that way. I use a pick like Steve and a magnet on a telecoping rod from Snapon to lift them out after using both Fiat tools from Bayless to push down the cups. Basically, how it works is you send him any number of old shims, tell him which size shims you need with a couple of bucks to cover shipping, and he will send you an equall amount of the needed sizes right back. I don't know of any good method of changing shims without the tool, except for pulling the cam box.
I should point out that after measing all of the valve clearances, if I need to adjust the majority of the valves, I always pull the box. This is actually faster than trying to use the tool. Just note the clearances when you do your measurements, then pull the box, mic the shims, do the math, install all of the new shims and slap that puppy back together.

I start out by using a baster to squirt the excess oil from around the valve springs back into the engine, and cleaning the gasket contact area. Then install cam box with a new gasket, check clearances and do the math. Then pull cam box again being careful not to mess up the gasket, change shims, and slap it back together reusing the same gasket. Now you can add a little oil in the cam housing to help on restart.

Not a complete asortment by any means,but I can usually get within a thou or so of the factory recomended minimum. I understand volvo uses the same type, more of them at the wreckers. Pete Angel, who lives in Colorado, has set up a shim exchange program. Basically, how it works is you send him any number of old shims, tell him which size shims you need with a couple of bucks to cover shipping, and he will send you an equall amount of the needed sizes right back. He is a great guy to deal with and you won't go wrong. Here's his e-mail address: pete.angel@att.net
He also will accept any donations of used, unneeded shims to keep the inventory well stocked.
Also, Pete has estblished a Fiat special tool loan program. He will loan any needed tool and all you have to do is cover the freight. He can give you the details via e-mail.
