When timing the X, 0,5 and 10 degrees marked on the belt cover is backwards in the book. It is 0, 5 and 10 degress with 0 being towards the back of the car and 10 being towards the firewall. The book says that it is 10 degrees to the back and 0 to the front.

I also have a 128 and check this book, and they show the exact same picture and text, only on a 128, the cover was manufactured differently so that it is correct.

I have been killing myself trying to get the darn car to run for the last couple of days. Yesterday, I got an honest to god 74 X 1/9 service manual (blue and about 200+ pgs!) and it answered my questions.

I will post pictures of the book, and of both the X and 128 covers so we can all see.

So, if you were never able to really get your car tuned, and it seems that you were about 10 degrees off of where you wanted to be, then here is your answer.

The factory manual is great, but it too has some errors. The most noteworthy is the diagram showing the relationship of the connecting rod numbers to the aux shaft. They had that backwards!!

The mark closest to the engine mount is 0 and the mark closest to the distributor is 10, correct?

The "0" mark or TDC is at the top,(towards the top of the car), and the 10 degree is towards the rear of the car (away from the dizzy).

Imagining the crank pulley spinning the other way would tug on the tensioner bearing which would constantly try to loosen it, a poor design.

Thus, the mark by the dizzy would be the last the moving pulley mark would encounter and must be 0 TDC, allowing the other two to be "before TDC". If you mistake the first mark in the rotation as TDC, the following two would naturally arrive "after TDC", which isn't right in most cases (though I imagine there are motors that have "after-TDC" marks).

This is alot of explanation, I know. I'm just putting down how you could work it out when you have no book, or can't trust it. This is actually the thought process I go through when we've been working on your cars, Eric. Guess that's why I'm a programmer, I have to get everything down to the nuts and bolts.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I agree with Steve about that it can't be 5 and 10 after zero unless it is 5 and 10 retarded, yet when I hold the timing cover from a 128 and an X 1/9, there is only one mark that lines up, the one nearest the Dizzy on the 128 cover and the one farthest from the Dizzy on the X.

I will try and post some picutres tonight.

Also, note that the timing marks on the 1500 are quite different.

The mark on top of the timing belt cover is only for aligning the pulley when replacing the belt, you also are supposed to align the crank pulley with the top mark (TDC), & forget the rotor position for now.

After the belt is properly installed, you want to rotate the complete assembly at least one or two COMPLETE revolutions, THEN CHECK AGAIN BOTH timing marks (Crank and cam positions, as described above) to confirm that both pulleys are aligned.

Lastly, you can verify that the rotor is pointing at No.4, if not just remove the 13mm nut and tab, lift the dizzy a little and rotate the shaft towards No.4 cylinder, and put back the dizzy into the block.

Start the car and align the crankshaft pulley (with the light) at the 10 degree mark (towards the rear of the car), then just tight the 13mm nut again and you are set.

Then, you will KNOW where TDC is (if I recall, you don't have a mark on your flywheel). The right cover will have the most clockwise mark line up with the pulley, and the other two should be to the left of it (clockwise). If you would like to see the missprint, I have posted a page with a scan of both the Haynes book and the Fiat service manual. Also included is four different pictures of both an X 1/9 and a 128 timing cover. Now that my timing is set right, my X is MUCH happier.

The pictures on the Hynes; 1) is 10 deg. 2) is 5 deg. and 3) is 0 deg.

It seems that the left (highest) mark on your cover is 10 and the one at the right end (lowest) is 0.

VERY interesting about the timing covers, that's a new one on me!! Pull either #1 or #4 plug, position the piston at TDC(0), and see where the which cover shows it at TDC (0)(the BIG mark). There is obviously a difference in crank pulleys between the 128 and X.

With the flywheel set at 10 degrees btdc the one mark lines up OK but the other is almost lined up with that little cast lug on the snail mount. Their about 170 degrees apart. [FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->On the cam pully, there are two marks, one should be on the front and lines up with the mark on the engine mount, the second one lines up with a pointer on the metal bracket the the cover bolts onto.

I have seen some pullys that are marked on the same side, and better yet, mine that I am useing will allow you to index on either mark as well. Took me quite a while to figure out why the H$#@ the car wouldn't fire.
