As for "typical stuff", my son took a VW Jetta four banger and installed a longer plenum system, headers, and a chip... while lowering the suspension and adding some awesome 17 inch wheels. (Blacked out the windows on a WHITE car.)
None of this is smog legal but the car PASSED anyway this year without even replacing the chip. I believe he makes another 60-80 horsepower or so...
(Before he bought an Impreza WRX, he was gonna add a turbo... but he sold it to his sis instead! You can talk to Zucker about WRX's too!)
Most of these shops HAVE dynos... so have them do some before and after tests with a GUARANTEED minimum increase!

For turbo cars with computer controlled wastegates, performance chips/computers make a lot of difference by altering boost schedules and wastegate duty cycles.
For N/A cars performance chips tend to be rather hit or miss on any real performance gains. Most current cars are setup very closely with not a lot of room for margin, so performance chips tend to make very small gains typically in raising rev limits, fuel and timing curves.
I think the performance computer for the Dodge Neon adds maybe 5hp at the most. The performance computer for an older Dodge Daytona Turbo adds at least another 25hp.
Performance exhausts usually make a bigger difference due to the car companies cutting costs by using crimp bent exhausts. The aftermarket (Dynomax among others)makes very nice flowing mandrel bent systems with better flowing mufflers. A 5-15hp gain is not unheard of.
I'm still somewhat undecided on some the high flowing intake systems. I understand how they flow more air, but most of them pull air from underneath the hood which I think would negate any airflow gains. Others pull air from outside but the location of the inlet allows large amounts of water from puddles, etc to be sucked into the motor and can hydrolock the engine.
The concept is still the same as the older V-8's. More air in, more air out equals more power. Todays engines are just tuned better and the engineers have extracted most of the power they can from them. A well tuned engine makes lots of power but it also creates less emissions due to its efficiency.

As for "typical stuff", my son took a VW Jetta four banger and installed a longer plenum system, headers, and a chip... while lowering the suspension and adding some awesome 17 inch wheels. (Blacked out the windows on a WHITE car.)
None of this is smog legal but the car PASSED anyway this year without even replacing the chip. I believe he makes another 60-80 horsepower or so...
(Before he bought an Impreza WRX, he was gonna add a turbo... but he sold it to his sis instead! You can talk to Zucker about WRX's too!)
Most of these shops HAVE dynos... so have them do some before and after tests with a GUARANTEED minimum increase!

For turbo cars with computer controlled wastegates, performance chips/computers make a lot of difference by altering boost schedules and wastegate duty cycles.
For N/A cars performance chips tend to be rather hit or miss on any real performance gains. Most current cars are setup very closely with not a lot of room for margin, so performance chips tend to make very small gains typically in raising rev limits, fuel and timing curves.
I think the performance computer for the Dodge Neon adds maybe 5hp at the most. The performance computer for an older Dodge Daytona Turbo adds at least another 25hp.
Performance exhausts usually make a bigger difference due to the car companies cutting costs by using crimp bent exhausts. The aftermarket (Dynomax among others)makes very nice flowing mandrel bent systems with better flowing mufflers. A 5-15hp gain is not unheard of.
I'm still somewhat undecided on some the high flowing intake systems. I understand how they flow more air, but most of them pull air from underneath the hood which I think would negate any airflow gains. Others pull air from outside but the location of the inlet allows large amounts of water from puddles, etc to be sucked into the motor and can hydrolock the engine.
The concept is still the same as the older V-8's. More air in, more air out equals more power. Todays engines are just tuned better and the engineers have extracted most of the power they can from them. A well tuned engine makes lots of power but it also creates less emissions due to its efficiency.
