Does anyone know if a gerneric (i.e., available at AutoZone, NAPA, etc.) belt is available for the crank to water pump belt for an 83 X1/9 with A/C (and FI, obviously). Vick's has not had them in stock for about a month and I would like to replace mine this weekend. The Vick's folks suggested that I would probably be able to get one locally, but were not able to give me the necessary dimensions and I couldn't find it in my shop manual either (all it said was vee belt). I was able to get the water pump to alternator, crank to A/C, and timing belts from Vick's without any problem, so now I just need the water pump to crank belt so that I can do a complete replacement. Thanks for the quick response. I just got off the phone with two different NAPA stores here in Nashville and neither one carried the water pump to crank belt. However, they did carry both the water pump to alternator and the crank to A/C belts, and the timing belt as well. This seems odd to me. The reason that I called the second NAPA store was based on the comments I got from the first one.....Quotes like "who makes fiat", and "I don't have it so you'll have to go to a dealer" did not instill me with confidence. The second guy was a bit more knowledgable, but still not able to help. Is the crank to water pump belt the same as the crank to A/C belt? I notice that they cost the same in every catalog that I have looked at. If not, can you tell me specifically what belts you purchased from NAPA (part#, dimensions, etc. or a OEM number). Also, where do you find parts interchange information like you mentioned in your note. I imagine that info would be very useful. Again, I really appreciate you help.

PS: In Tennessee, we have a very regressive tax structure, where the sales tax is generally higher than shipping charges for an order of any significant size. Also, I have found that it's easier to get things from the catalog houses because they have knowledge that I don't have and am not likely to find locally (as you can tell from the above responses). Without interchange info, I have to ask for parts for FIAT or Bertone at the parts counter, and after that initial blank stare, attendants usually are unable to find even the Make/Model in there catalogs.....Ignorance can be very irritating. Ya didn't say anything about still having the old belt or not. Most have a name and part number stamped on them... unless its an original belt fron FIAT or Bertone.
I took a broken belt to a parts store and was able to find one just by staring and comparing. Also, some hardware stores carry a full range of belts for rider mowers and the like and they may have something that works. We have an OLD "independant" one in town from 1947... and the NOS he has is a treasure.

I am heading down to Huntsville to tinker on the car with Steve H. this weekend and one of the things on the agenda is a prophylactic replacement of belts. I am just gathering up parts for the trip and was not able to read the markings on the belt in situ.

I apparently misplaced my old one... and it was a bitch to install. The "books" said it called for a Gates 7270 and the string PROVED it was a full inch in diameter too small. I installed a 7290 and it fit perfectly... using the string as a guide.
ONE IMPORTANT NOTE... Shape the string to the approximate shape of the pulleys and place INSIDE the new belt. Trying to pinch it tight and the belt tight for a flat look at the DIAMETER gives some false readings. Shaping the string so it fits just inside the V of a new belt worked best.
BTW... on a '79, the Crank-Water Pump-Alternator belt W/O AC is a Dayco/Gates 15325. Works great.

Does anyone know if a gerneric (i.e., available at AutoZone, NAPA, etc.) belt is available for the crank to water pump belt for an 83 X1/9 with A/C (and FI, obviously). Vick's has not had them in stock for about a month and I would like to replace mine this weekend. The Vick's folks suggested that I would probably be able to get one locally, but were not able to give me the necessary dimensions and I couldn't find it in my shop manual either (all it said was vee belt). I was able to get the water pump to alternator, crank to A/C, and timing belts from Vick's without any problem, so now I just need the water pump to crank belt so that I can do a complete replacement. Anything past 82 and the make "Bertone" seems to throw auto parts stores into the Twilite Zone. I just purchased all my belts from Napa last week with no problem. Same thing goes for all your hoses and many electrical components(Hint: VW Rabbit electrical parts are cheaper and always available). Heck, I just purchased speedo cable for $9 at Napa. Most things are available at these non-fiat parts sources, most of the time cheaper and no shipping charge, but you have to look. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Thanks for the quick response. I just got off the phone with two different NAPA stores here in Nashville and neither one carried the water pump to crank belt. However, they did carry both the water pump to alternator and the crank to A/C belts, and the timing belt as well. This seems odd to me. The reason that I called the second NAPA store was based on the comments I got from the first one.....Quotes like "who makes fiat", and "I don't have it so you'll have to go to a dealer" did not instill me with confidence. The second guy was a bit more knowledgable, but still not able to help. Is the crank to water pump belt the same as the crank to A/C belt? I notice that they cost the same in every catalog that I have looked at. If not, can you tell me specifically what belts you purchased from NAPA (part#, dimensions, etc. or a OEM number). Also, where do you find parts interchange information like you mentioned in your note. I imagine that info would be very useful. Again, I really appreciate you help.

PS: In Tennessee, we have a very regressive tax structure, where the sales tax is generally higher than shipping charges for an order of any significant size. Also, I have found that it's easier to get things from the catalog houses because they have knowledge that I don't have and am not likely to find locally (as you can tell from the above responses). Without interchange info, I have to ask for parts for FIAT or Bertone at the parts counter, and after that initial blank stare, attendants usually are unable to find even the Make/Model in there catalogs.....Ignorance can be very irritating. Ya didn't say anything about still having the old belt or not. Most have a name and part number stamped on them... unless its an original belt fron FIAT or Bertone.
I took a broken belt to a parts store and was able to find one just by staring and comparing. Also, some hardware stores carry a full range of belts for rider mowers and the like and they may have something that works. We have an OLD "independant" one in town from 1947... and the NOS he has is a treasure.

The reason I didn't say anything about the old belt is it's still on the car and working fine. I am heading down to Huntsville to tinker on the car with Steve H. this weekend and one of the things on the agenda is a prophylactic replacement of belts. I am just gathering up parts for the trip and was not able to read the markings on the belt in situ.
