It was to dark to tell much about them but one runs and the other is supposed to have a good engine but the coolant pipes underneath froze and split. Has anybody ever replaced these pipes and do you have any tips? I was thinking of just cutting and sliding a slightly smaller o.d. pipe inside and rewelding. This would avoid having to cut and weld the tunnel but I'm not sure if I would get enough coolant flow. Any comments appreciated.

Dang, man! I wish I had enough space to do that, I have a guy here in my area trying to sell me 2 X1/9s also - both partscars, though: 1 is a blue '77 with a/c and slotmags, the other an orange '81 with no engine or tranny, most of the interior is gone, but it has tons of little bits, good glass and CD-91s. He wants $300 for the pair. I don't have enough $ though, I just blew my stash junkyard-hopping today. Bought some cool stuff man (see other posts)...

The coolant pipes are doable. You do have to cut the shielding away to remove them AFAIK, but it would be worthwhile to remove the old pipes. All you have to do is go to some exhaust shop with the oldies (if they are still recognizable) and have the shop bend you some new ones, using the oldies as guides. That would be the best way I believe, and then some mild welding to put the shielding back together. Not too bad. I think I would hesitate to use small pipes inside the oldies though, seems like it could be restrictive. -Mac.

There are many different types of pvc that will withstand different stresses. UV resistant electrical conduit should work good, and if heated hot enough becomes flexible to bend into tight spots.

The alternative is to use copper/kunifer but you need to be careful of fast corrosion with those delicate under floor pipes. The advantage is that they help to shed the heat.

I was thinking to get an exhaust shop to bend me some duplicate metal pipes of the same diameter as the originals. I was thinking perhaps of a slightly larger diameter even, but it might have an adverse effect on the water pump action, so for now I use stock size in my example...

Then I would take these new pipes and weld a series of several small metal cooling fins along the sides of both before installing them onto the car.

The fins, in theory, would increase the metal surface area exposed to the outside, and would provide a much larger area of heat dissipation, causing the pipes to act almost as secondary radiators.

Any thoughts on that? -Mac.

1. The fins can only be attached to the straight runs, and most of them run enclosed in a metal shield. Since the fins won´t do any good if air is not allowed to flow along them, you may have to remove the shield to leave the pipes exposed.

2. Heat is transfered from water to inner surface of pipe by convection, from inner to outer pipe surface by conduction and from outer pipe surface by convection. For fins to be efficient there must be a continuous metal path from pipe outer surface to fins, therefore they must be welded all along it´s whole length, which may not be simple to accomplish.
One solution could be to use longitudinally finned steel or aluminum tubes. These tubes are used in process industry for heat transfer equipment, like nitrogen evaporators. I have no idea how expensive they may be (be prepared).
Radially finned tubes might be used for the curved lengthes, although bending may not be easy.

In any case, I don´t think the improvement you may get is worth the time and the money you would invest. The radiator fin area is way larger than the tube fin area you may add, and the outer film coefficient for the radiator is also much higher, since air flow through it is faster than along the pipe runs, because the air path is designed to drive air through and because the fan is there to help.

I don't actually intend to do it, and if I did I would in fact be modifying the pipe enclosure to funnel airflow past the pipes. But it does seem like too much effort for not a big return - which is why I never have actually tried it. -Mac.
