I hadda friend at Pac Bell who WAS nuts about P-38s as is father built them during the war right down the road from me here in BURBANK, CA.
My father worked there also as an Aviation Jet Mechanic and came home with several old color fotos... I sent all my dupes to Scot up in Northern CA... I still have some beautiful shots of Constellations, a P-38, and others of F100s and F101's...
Anyway... I loved the concept... rather radical huh!
It reminds me of the movie of "Flight of the Phoenix" where the downed flyers built their own plane from the wreckage of the one they crashed in... The P-38 causes me to think that some engineers... with extra parts lying around...

Haven't seen a 51 OR a 38 at anytime. Those 12's really make an awesome sound... I can't imagine the sound of twin-12's on a P38!
As for the FIAT's horsepower... like I explain to my wife... its not HOW MUCH ya got... but what ya do with it! (He, He!)
I think if ya really wanna add some ponies ya gotta swap out the single cam motor. Best and BIGGEST bang for the buck.
But there are all sorts of little improvement ya can make that add up to some little excitement also.
To Summarize... My son and his new WRX. Hot , Black, wagon, 227 HP, all wheel drive, Turbo, I had it to 140 from Bouquet up Vasquez before the twisties and blew away a 328 Bimmer!
And unless I drive it like that... its no particular thrill. The X on the other hand... just having it START is EXCITEMENT!

As far a P-38's go, there's a flying one at Chino, and we (kids & I) went to see it fly a couple of years ago - most impressive. Those V-12 Allison engines have a distinctive sound (a mere 1,800 HP each). Trivia note: P-38's have counter-rotating propellers which cancels out the prop torque - a big problem on high-power single-engine aircraft. I hope you didn't encounter the same phenomenon with the WRX!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I hadda friend at Pac Bell who WAS nuts about P-38s as is father built them during the war right down the road from me here in BURBANK, CA.
My father worked there also as an Aviation Jet Mechanic and came home with several old color fotos... I sent all my dupes to Scot up in Northern CA... I still have some beautiful shots of Constellations, a P-38, and others of F100s and F101's...
Anyway... I loved the concept... rather radical huh!
It reminds me of the movie of "Flight of the Phoenix" where the downed flyers built their own plane from the wreckage of the one they crashed in... The P-38 causes me to think that some engineers... with extra parts lying around...

Haven't seen a 51 OR a 38 at anytime. Those 12's really make an awesome sound... I can't imagine the sound of twin-12's on a P38!
As for the FIAT's horsepower... like I explain to my wife... its not HOW MUCH ya got... but what ya do with it! (He, He!)
I think if ya really wanna add some ponies ya gotta swap out the single cam motor. Best and BIGGEST bang for the buck.
But there are all sorts of little improvement ya can make that add up to some little excitement also.
To Summarize... My son and his new WRX. Hot , Black, wagon, 227 HP, all wheel drive, Turbo, I had it to 140 from Bouquet up Vasquez before the twisties and blew away a 328 Bimmer!
And unless I drive it like that... its no particular thrill. The X on the other hand... just having it START is EXCITEMENT!
