I have not had great luck with this job. Until recently, I used the hammer method and always ended up with play in my new bearings.

I did one on a press and it came out better. but the wheel still has a little play. It may be the brand of bearings I'm using.

Anyway, in my opinion you need:
* a press
* a bearing
* a retaining ring (and maybe a spare

* the retaining ring tool ($20 at Bayless, Obert has one too now I hear).
* a new axle nut.
* a Dremel with cutting wheel, just in case.
* hammer and chisel

Steps:
1) if rear wheel: unstake hub nut, I use a center punch and hammer
2) loosen hub nut, I use an 18" breaker bar with a long section of conduit (or pipe) over it. The nut is 30mm
3) jack up car, remove upright, I use a screw type ball joint separator to try to save the boots
4) use press or hammer and sockets to press/beat hub out of bearing
5) unstake ring, then try to use tool to remove retaining ring
6) find out that ring is corroded in upright
7) use Dremel to cut through ring, then use hammer and chisel to peel it out
8) use outer race of old bearing to press in new bearing, making sure it seats completely.
9) install new ring. There are 2 different designs of rings that require different size tools. The Bayless tool has both sizes.
DON'T INSTALL UPSIDE DOWN. The rubber lip should face OUT, away form the bearing. Tighten with tool and stake ring.
10) press hub into bearing, supporting inner race from below (absolutely crucial)
11) wiggle hub in upright and note play

The real thing wasn't available, so I made one with steel plate and a hacksaw, drilling and filing a 1/2" hole in the center for a ratchet. The others could be made this way. I have done a number of bearing replacements - next to my floor jack(s), the hydraulic press is probably my most-valued tool. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

As I recall the small side (~1.8") fits the front on the 74-78, and the large side (~2.05") fits the front of the 79-on and rear of the 74-78.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
