which end of stud to head?

Got a replacement for the exhaust manifold center stud, same length but the amount of threads are different on each end. Do I put the short threads to the head? The top stud is the old one and the left side was on the outside holding the shield on. Probably a silly question, but safer to ask.

went to install and realized this is for the manifold, not the shield, so I flipped it and put the long side in for support of the exhaust system as well.
 
Sorry Bernice, didn't see your reply. Turns out this is the same exact one Chris sells, so now I have a backup. I put the long threaded side in, short threaded side out. The one at Carquest are made by Dorman.
