whirling scraping noise in neutral

True Classic
I hear this whirling scraping type noise when idleing in neutral with the clutch out. Put clutch in, it goes away. It's always been there, sometimes seems a bit louder than other times. What would that be?

My car does that too.
I put in a new clutch, pressure plate and release bearing when I built it.
It's likley either dry/not enough grease on the input shaft where the release bearing rides or the trans input shaft bearing.

I had a problem similar on my 924S and it turned out to be a heat shield. Odds are its a TB bearing though.

Sounds like the throwout bearing...

...did on BB 4RE just before it completely went kaputt (when the car was running in neutral with my foot off the clutch). Prior to that, it only made that sound with the clutch in.
