having built a dallara replica in the past, i would rather not go through the crappy bayless kit again, assuming it's still available..
the iap kit is worse, and ugly to boot.
does anyone have a good source for a widebody kit?
i was thinking to myself that since the body lines are so square allready, how hard would it be to section the fenders and just widen them?
(car is gatting a roll cage, so there are no real structural concerns)
i.e. cut the top of the fender lengthwise, add 2 inches of material, and weld it back together? for the front this would necessitate a bit of work at the nose to make it look right, but it shouldn't be major?
and for the tail make it more like 6". the targa bar area would require a radiused bend in your fillpeice to blend it, but it should fit fine...
which leaves the tail, which would be easy (move the taillights out and fill where necessary)
and the front of the rear fenders, where i was thinking intake scoops similiar to the old bmw race cars would fit the bill niceley.
mount a pair of oil coolers in 'em and duct the rest of the air out through the exhaust enclosure...
just thinking aloud, but this would pretty much keep the original profile and lines, just stretch a few of them...
why? because i have a very healthy 383 smallblock chevy that needs a home >

Man, Even Wayne Wright went with a smaller engine, and he's the one we all think of when talking about stuffing a hurkin' American powertrain in an X... Just my personal opinion, but I think that engine will be so big as to cause serious handling issues, as Matthias said. Not saying it's not possible, just maybe more than would be needed to accomplish your project's goal...
Actually, if you're serious about this project, you really need to get together with Wayne to kick some of your ideas around! Not only is he a bigtime Xhead, and the CheV6X man himself, but he is a to-the-bone hot-rodder!!
As for the ideas you have for a one-off body mod, I think I know what you are describing, but am not sure if I am picturing it quite as you mean?
You want to cut the fenders off and mount them further out, welding in to fill the space?

The big problem is not width, but fore and aft room. There is just not enough room length wise for a big engine. Then there is weight. The V6 is still prety heavy so I suspect my setup is a bit too tail heavy to be competative(but it sure is fun to step on the cas and feel the power).
I do have designs for lengthing the body so one can run a true mid engine setup like the 914. A longer wheel base would be much safer at higher speeds too.

To get enough room you need to remove the gas tank and spare like I did on mine then add another 4-6" in the body behind the targa top, then move the wheel back maybe 2". The final look would add a panel behind the targa sides like the Scorpian. Run 15" wheels and raise and widen the fender flairs up so you see a lot of tire.

i designed a triple rear axle mini truck that was based on a stretched x 1/9 .. hot tub and everything.
basically you stretch it 6 ft in front of the targa bar, and 6 ft behind it, triple axels, snugtop the rear.. hydrostatic drivetrain and 8 wheel drive, 8 wheel steering using chevy blazer fron suspention at all locations, inboard disk brakes, etc.

Just a thought, but here goes... Instead of elongating the car to mount the engine in a front-to-back fashion, would it be feasable to just widen the rear end & mount the powertrain transversely?
I don't know whether that would even be possible with such a big engine, and I guess you'd need to have a whole different tranny setup. Just a crazy idea - but since we're already talking about cutting the car in half, adding length & changing the wheelbase, do you think it would be more feasable / easier / harder to do it like this?

Using that set up you could possibly fit the engine and trans in there. You would end up with pretty short axles. If you start widening, you may need to move the towers out. They may have to go out anyway just to clear the motor/trans. When you start moving towers and frame members things get pretty messey.
One option with the fore/aft idea and keep the same wheel base would be to move the driver forward 8". This would require redoing the dash/windsield etc. For a race car it may be OK.
The biggest problem with a big engine in the small car is the small frontal area which equates to a small area for a radiator. HorsePower=HEAT, and I am now in the process of redesigning the rear deck to let the heat(air) out and adding an engine oil cooler. Things are getting tight back there. If I didn't have those headers running all over the place I would have more room(and it might even be cooler).<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I am no expert in these kind of mods, but I do think that might be the only way to semi-counteract the issues of torque steer & massive rear weight bias... aside from his point on needing more physical space for the powertrain...

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->yeah. i've done this before. it adds about 200 lbs to the tail when your all done (there is a lot of steel you can pull out when you roll cage the car) as it's hard up against the rear firewall it's not as bad as you woutld expect. a pair of optima 800's and a fuel cell in the nose balance it out pretty well. it still handles pretty neutral with 175/50/r13's on the front and 275/35/r15 pirelli p zeroes on the back...
a lot of it is you dry sump the car so you can snug the block down lower.

having built a dallara replica in the past, i would rather not go through the crappy bayless kit again, assuming it's still available..
the iap kit is worse, and ugly to boot.
does anyone have a good source for a widebody kit?
i was thinking to myself that since the body lines are so square allready, how hard would it be to section the fenders and just widen them?
(car is gatting a roll cage, so there are no real structural concerns)
i.e. cut the top of the fender lengthwise, add 2 inches of material, and weld it back together? for the front this would necessitate a bit of work at the nose to make it look right, but it shouldn't be major?
and for the tail make it more like 6". the targa bar area would require a radiused bend in your fillpeice to blend it, but it should fit fine...
which leaves the tail, which would be easy (move the taillights out and fill where necessary)
and the front of the rear fenders, where i was thinking intake scoops similiar to the old bmw race cars would fit the bill niceley.
mount a pair of oil coolers in 'em and duct the rest of the air out through the exhaust enclosure...
just thinking aloud, but this would pretty much keep the original profile and lines, just stretch a few of them...
why? because i have a very healthy 383 smallblock chevy that needs a home >

Man, Even Wayne Wright went with a smaller engine, and he's the one we all think of when talking about stuffing a hurkin' American powertrain in an X... Just my personal opinion, but I think that engine will be so big as to cause serious handling issues, as Matthias said. Not saying it's not possible, just maybe more than would be needed to accomplish your project's goal...
Actually, if you're serious about this project, you really need to get together with Wayne to kick some of your ideas around! Not only is he a bigtime Xhead, and the CheV6X man himself, but he is a to-the-bone hot-rodder!!
As for the ideas you have for a one-off body mod, I think I know what you are describing, but am not sure if I am picturing it quite as you mean?
You want to cut the fenders off and mount them further out, welding in to fill the space?

The big problem is not width, but fore and aft room. There is just not enough room length wise for a big engine. Then there is weight. The V6 is still prety heavy so I suspect my setup is a bit too tail heavy to be competative(but it sure is fun to step on the cas and feel the power).
I do have designs for lengthing the body so one can run a true mid engine setup like the 914. A longer wheel base would be much safer at higher speeds too.

To get enough room you need to remove the gas tank and spare like I did on mine then add another 4-6" in the body behind the targa top, then move the wheel back maybe 2". The final look would add a panel behind the targa sides like the Scorpian. Run 15" wheels and raise and widen the fender flairs up so you see a lot of tire.

i designed a triple rear axle mini truck that was based on a stretched x 1/9 .. hot tub and everything.
basically you stretch it 6 ft in front of the targa bar, and 6 ft behind it, triple axels, snugtop the rear.. hydrostatic drivetrain and 8 wheel drive, 8 wheel steering using chevy blazer fron suspention at all locations, inboard disk brakes, etc.

Just a thought, but here goes... Instead of elongating the car to mount the engine in a front-to-back fashion, would it be feasable to just widen the rear end & mount the powertrain transversely?
I don't know whether that would even be possible with such a big engine, and I guess you'd need to have a whole different tranny setup. Just a crazy idea - but since we're already talking about cutting the car in half, adding length & changing the wheelbase, do you think it would be more feasable / easier / harder to do it like this?

Using that set up you could possibly fit the engine and trans in there. You would end up with pretty short axles. If you start widening, you may need to move the towers out. They may have to go out anyway just to clear the motor/trans. When you start moving towers and frame members things get pretty messey.
One option with the fore/aft idea and keep the same wheel base would be to move the driver forward 8". This would require redoing the dash/windsield etc. For a race car it may be OK.
The biggest problem with a big engine in the small car is the small frontal area which equates to a small area for a radiator. HorsePower=HEAT, and I am now in the process of redesigning the rear deck to let the heat(air) out and adding an engine oil cooler. Things are getting tight back there. If I didn't have those headers running all over the place I would have more room(and it might even be cooler).<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I am no expert in these kind of mods, but I do think that might be the only way to semi-counteract the issues of torque steer & massive rear weight bias... aside from his point on needing more physical space for the powertrain...

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->yeah. i've done this before. it adds about 200 lbs to the tail when your all done (there is a lot of steel you can pull out when you roll cage the car) as it's hard up against the rear firewall it's not as bad as you woutld expect. a pair of optima 800's and a fuel cell in the nose balance it out pretty well. it still handles pretty neutral with 175/50/r13's on the front and 275/35/r15 pirelli p zeroes on the back...
a lot of it is you dry sump the car so you can snug the block down lower.
