x1/9 gauges question

Does anyone know what the "slow down" light is for? I mean it's pretty self explanatory on what it means but mine never goes on. i have a 78 so no backward tachometer just the regular gauges.

Traditionally...

It was hooked to an overheat sensor on the CAT. Yours may or may not be intact or functional. Early carbed CAT systems were prone to overheating and collapse, so this was a preventive measure. Prolonged WOT would over tax the CAT with HCs, causing an overheat situation, which could then cause the innards to melt and collapse and then, clog.

thanks

Alway's wondered why they put that in there. thought it was for another country that required the light, to be in compliance with a law.
