I've found a few on the net at all various prices and conditions. I'd like to find a very clean model without rust but I'm not sure if that is always possible with a Fiat/Bertone. The two Fiat's I owned rusted very quickly.

As far as finding a rust free car - well, here in New York, the only rist free cars you will find are ones that have had the rust repaired... I've never seen an "honestly" rust free, never repaired car. Of course, down south, the case may be different for you.

Glad to see that someone else here in Raleigh might get an X - we could race them around the beltline (ha ha). I had an 80 X1/9 in college and went through the same mid-life thing last October. I was just surfing around the internet and found a virgin 80 X (almost identical to my old one) for sale in Kansas. After 2 months of emails with the owner, I flew out to Kansas City and drove it home! Talk about a leap of faith, driving back 1200+ miles in a 20 year old car (a Fiat, no less). Came through like a champ, though, with more than a couple of fond looks from passing females. Ahh, to be young again...
Anyway, I'm very pleased with it and am spending all my spare time (that's an oxymoron) tweaking it just like old times. Can't really give you any pointers on where to look for a great deal on an X1/9 (maybe traderonline.com or collectorcartraderonline.com - that's how I found mine), but if you DO find one, don't worry about parts or a good mechanic locally. I found Tim Nines in Franklinton who was a mechanic when they were first sold here in 74 and he used to race them. Stop by his place sometime and check out his Fiat/3-wheel chopper conversions! (He has one with a 1500 engine and 5-speed tranny that he had to put wheelie bars on ... says it will get to 140 between telephone poles
) He has at least 5 part cars in the junk yard and also very reasonable on prices.
Send me an email and I'll forward some pics of my "new" toy. Maybe if I ever figure out FrontPage 2000, we could put together a Carolinas Forum page and compete with these guys...it'll be a tough one to beat, though.

I noticed while I was surfing e-bay today that there is a 1983 Bertone X1/9 for sale by an outfit in Pleasantview, TN, which is about 50 miles west of Knoxville. I'm not sure how far that is from Raleigh, NC. The add only gives basic info about the car. From the pics it looks like the driver's side leather is a bit worn but the rest of the interior looks nice. It also looks like the metal framing at the rear of the engine compartment has been replaced. Otherwise the exterior looks grossly pretty nice. I don't know anything about the seller's, Doug's Auto Sales. They list there phone number in the add: (615)746-3684. The auction is set to end on 1/12 at about 10am PST. The auction number is 537278869. The VIN is ZBBBS00A2D7150238, which would make this a late 1983 Bertone. The paint is two tone red/charcol. The interior is red leather. I think they said the car has about 53K miles on it. Current price is $1025 but their reserve has not yet been met (to give you an idea, an 86 Bertone X1/9 auction ending today is at $2850) The car looks very similar to mine which I love. It may be worth a call.

I assume you have investigated FLU (Fiat Lancia Unlimited)? It is more or less and east coast club, but not X1/9 specific. There is a chapter based in Atlanta that I belong to (I'm in Alabama). While not X1/9 specific, it is a good organization with plenty of X1/9 folks in it. It would be a great source of info on cars for sale.

This is a great place to try to find a car - I also jumped back in last year (after getting rid of my 81 back in 86). Anyway, I found my "new" 82 from a person here on the board. He was in Atlanta (I'm in Charlotte); we hooked up, struck a deal and I've been on the road since last summer after a tranny rebuild.
I'm working (through the XANA forum) to try to build a SE Chapter but haven't gotten many responses. I see that Rob is in Raleigh - maybe we can all hook up and get this going together.
Anyway, hang in there, keep searching - there's a car out there for you somewhere. Definitely the best decision I made (acquiring another X); every day I drive it (took her out again today after a few weeks tucked away, safe from the cold) I have a big grin on my face and it's a blast!

help in purchasing one. I'd like to find a late model Bertone around a 85-88 model. If you could point me in the right direction of where to look and what to look for and also price? I've found a few on the net at all various prices and conditions. I'd like to find a very clean model without rust but I'm not sure if that is always possible with a Fiat/Bertone. The two Fiat's I owned rusted very quickly.

I'd suggest that you head over to the XANA development forum - we are trying to get a few east coast chapters started right now.
As far as finding a rust free car - well, here in New York, the only rist free cars you will find are ones that have had the rust repaired... I've never seen an "honestly" rust free, never repaired car. Of course, down south, the case may be different for you.

Glad to see that someone else here in Raleigh might get an X - we could race them around the beltline (ha ha). I had an 80 X1/9 in college and went through the same mid-life thing last October. I was just surfing around the internet and found a virgin 80 X (almost identical to my old one) for sale in Kansas. After 2 months of emails with the owner, I flew out to Kansas City and drove it home! Talk about a leap of faith, driving back 1200+ miles in a 20 year old car (a Fiat, no less). Came through like a champ, though, with more than a couple of fond looks from passing females. Ahh, to be young again...
Anyway, I'm very pleased with it and am spending all my spare time (that's an oxymoron) tweaking it just like old times. Can't really give you any pointers on where to look for a great deal on an X1/9 (maybe traderonline.com or collectorcartraderonline.com - that's how I found mine), but if you DO find one, don't worry about parts or a good mechanic locally. I found Tim Nines in Franklinton who was a mechanic when they were first sold here in 74 and he used to race them. Stop by his place sometime and check out his Fiat/3-wheel chopper conversions! (He has one with a 1500 engine and 5-speed tranny that he had to put wheelie bars on ... says it will get to 140 between telephone poles

I noticed while I was surfing e-bay today that there is a 1983 Bertone X1/9 for sale by an outfit in Pleasantview, TN, which is about 50 miles west of Knoxville. I'm not sure how far that is from Raleigh, NC. The add only gives basic info about the car. From the pics it looks like the driver's side leather is a bit worn but the rest of the interior looks nice. It also looks like the metal framing at the rear of the engine compartment has been replaced. Otherwise the exterior looks grossly pretty nice. I don't know anything about the seller's, Doug's Auto Sales. They list there phone number in the add: (615)746-3684. The auction is set to end on 1/12 at about 10am PST. The auction number is 537278869. The VIN is ZBBBS00A2D7150238, which would make this a late 1983 Bertone. The paint is two tone red/charcol. The interior is red leather. I think they said the car has about 53K miles on it. Current price is $1025 but their reserve has not yet been met (to give you an idea, an 86 Bertone X1/9 auction ending today is at $2850) The car looks very similar to mine which I love. It may be worth a call.

I assume you have investigated FLU (Fiat Lancia Unlimited)? It is more or less and east coast club, but not X1/9 specific. There is a chapter based in Atlanta that I belong to (I'm in Alabama). While not X1/9 specific, it is a good organization with plenty of X1/9 folks in it. It would be a great source of info on cars for sale.

This is a great place to try to find a car - I also jumped back in last year (after getting rid of my 81 back in 86). Anyway, I found my "new" 82 from a person here on the board. He was in Atlanta (I'm in Charlotte); we hooked up, struck a deal and I've been on the road since last summer after a tranny rebuild.
I'm working (through the XANA forum) to try to build a SE Chapter but haven't gotten many responses. I see that Rob is in Raleigh - maybe we can all hook up and get this going together.
Anyway, hang in there, keep searching - there's a car out there for you somewhere. Definitely the best decision I made (acquiring another X); every day I drive it (took her out again today after a few weeks tucked away, safe from the cold) I have a big grin on my face and it's a blast!
