checked the leads at the rear defroster switch, got current on one wire, tried jumping it and nothing, tried a new switch an nothing... any thoughts? TIA

It ius but..

This thread was over in FSW and I just moved it!

To help with your question, check the ground wire at the window, might not be grounded.

What year? Not sure if yours has a relay or what. Does the dash indicator light up?

sorry bout that. car is a 79, i checked the wire from the window all the way to the switch and its working

Needs a ground though..

One wire at the window is (+) and the other is grounded. Check to make sure the ground wire is grounded.

IIRC the ground for the defroster on my '86 is on the driver's side. The ground wire comes off the grid, is tucked under the trim and then grounds to a screw in the sheet metal under the finish panel on the speaker shelf. In that driver's side back corner.
