True Classic
The tires on the 77X look brand new, like they had just been installed, which they had been, about 12 years ago. I got a set of Federal SS tires, right out of the oven with a 2018 date code from an excellent friend of mine who decided not to use them after just buying them.
Loaded up the GTI with the four tires and the four iron crosses with old tires and hauled them off to my favorite Mr. Tire. Picked them up later in the day and as we were loading them back into the GTI the "kid" who really is the smart guy in the tire changing part of the store noticed I had three passenger side and one driver side (the tires are directional) and took a quick minute to reverse it, since the underling who mounted the tires apparently has to learn about directional tires. Hey I was happy the kid caught it (when you are 70, everyone below 50 is a kid.
Installed them this morning and found the stick on weights on two wheels were hitting the caliper so I had to grind them down a tad...putting wheels on with wheel bolts is a pain, I always use two long studs to help my put the wheel on then remove them. All set to go see how round the are but it's supposed to rain for the next three days and I have a toe injury making life very painful at the moment so we all have to wait till next week to see what gives....and yes my back up plan is shaving the tires if they are not round. I have shaved Federals on the rat X and couldn't be happier with them.
