please help with transmission rebuild, lost pin for 3/4 shift rod end

bikesandcars

True Classic
Supposedly (from the manual and online article here) there is a pin that goes in the end of the 3/4 shift rod for final assembly of the shift rod assembly. I have the "footballs" and the rest of the pieces assembled, but I can't find that pin.

Does anyone have more info on what the pin is made from (steel, plastic), if its solid or hollow, and how long it is (so I can make one). What does it do? Can I just leave it out?

I'll try to post some pictures so you know what i mean.

I found a hollow plastic pin by my work bench that I don't recognize, but it doesn't seem like the right piece (i expect steel here).

any help appreciated.

The pin you need is a rounded end steel pin....

Pretty easy to lose. I have *misplaced* a couple myself over the years. Check in with your favorite FIAT parts vendor for a replacement or scavenge from your's or a friend's dead transaxle.

Ciao,

Thanks,

I was really hoping to get this transmission together tomorrow too :(

If anyone has made one before please help me out

best regards

Sweep around your work area,

check in your parts cleaning tub and drag a magnet around everywhere you have had the transaxle since disassembling. Who knows? It might show up.

Ciao,

Making one would be a real bitch

Thanks,

Making one would be a real bitch if you don't already have one in your hands... They aren't exactly complicated :) but they do have to be just about the exact right dimensions, and they are made of fairly hard steel. Midwest Bayless sells them for $1.49 and if they overnight it'll be cheaper and faster than trying to make your own, and waaaay less aggravating.

Besides, the one you lost will magically reappear the moment that you place the order.

Don't try it.

That pin is a VERY critical part. It transferes the little football movement to the 1-2 shift rail and locks it in place. Without it, when you try to select reverse, you will get 2nd and the shifter will be stuck in Neutral.

The pin is made of hardened tool steel and its dimentions are critical to its function. I wouldn't try to make one. But then I have a box full. If you can't get one from a vendor, let me know.

Thanks everyone, I placed my order for the "small bean" as its called. I used my magnet in the parts washer and completely cleaned the shop but couldn't find it.

The good news is that now I have a clean shop, and I had time to relax and get everything else cleaned up and ready to put together.

I'm also in the middle of rebuilding my tranny and despite having looked all over, I couldn't find the two large beans anywhere, so I added them to the rest of my parts order from Midwest. Yesterday when I moved the bell housing half to clean it, there underneath it on the towel sat both the beans. Coulda swore I looked there half a dozen times.... :mad2::mad2::mad2:

You DID look there

You DID look there half a dozen times and they really weren't there... until you placed the order. When you take them out they disappear, and then they magically reappear the moment that you place the order for the replacements.

I stash the detent springs and balls and the three beans in a ziplock bag the moment that I take them out.

Include the three shifter detent chrome steel balls and springs in the baggie with the rest of these small parts.

I found the pin (in my mailbox from Matt at MIdwest) and the tranny went back together smoothly.

Thanks for the help. It bench-shifts and spins freely on the car, I havn't driven it yet
