My remote release didn't work from the day I got the car, I just removed it when I did the central locking. However, it has always concerned me that if all else failed, I would have to cut to get into the trunk.
I made a new release using a bicycle brake cable.
drilled a hole in the tab that is used for the trunk grounds to secure the cable sheathing. My cable is crimped to the remote actuator cable. If I didn't have that, I would have simply looped it through the lever the main cable goes through. There is enough room for two cables there. Aluminum cable crimp barrels (1/16", I think) from Home Depot
Anchor plate for the other end of the cable sheath, so pulling the release cable requires minimal effort, unlike the original design.
Cable looped in engine bay to create handle. I used the original release wire clear sheath that was run along the frame rail
