Thanks doc. It's amazing how pathetic both the factory manual and the Haynes manual is for such a basic job. They also indicate the X steering assembly is very robust and in normal use should never need any work...guess the car had not been out long enough to show the plastic (there is the first clue) can wear out after 30 or so years!
The rat X can now go back outside to the curb where the engine bay seems to fill up with leaves, odd since I never removed the rain tray but did cut out the baffle panels on the sides of the engine cover and left off the plastic seal at the rear edge of the engine cover. DCOEs look very odd covered in leaves (sorry, brushed them off before I thought to take pictures.
