I think your prognosis on my existing tranny is the best I've heard so far. The trans was sitting in a parts car for many years before it found my way into the '78, and I'lll guess that there was some dirt and debris that built up on that shift rod to cause galling and sticking.
With that as the possible reason for it in my head, I am less afraid to pry the bejeezus out of the shifter if it sticks again before I replace the trans.
