Side vents/ducts, and now Snorkels!

I made the outer ducting as efficient as possible, given the materials at hand... here's a quick shot comparing the stock and opened out inlet duct, I think compared to stock there are very few impediments to flow.

and I opened the bodywork right up, so I could lay the rhomboidal duct back at as shallow an angle as possble.

Was the Prototipo snorkel for ram air, cool air or clean air? On my car the FAZA snorkel is for silly attitude. At idle I assume hot engine air will rise up through it and at speed maybe some ram air but it's not a sealed plenum on the IDFs, just opening through the engine bay.

When Suzuki first came out with ram air openings on their GSXR bike fairings I think it didn't become effective till over 60 or 70 mph.
One thing I really like about this forum is folks trying all manner of mods to Xs.

still a work in progress, but I like the way it's heading.

I added a leading edge to the rearmost edge of the duct opening, apparently this is one way to get big gains in the efficiency of a duct of this type.

The other big thing most aero advice says about ducting is pay attenton to leadng edges. Tne stock duct has big squared off edges, so I've tapered them all out.

Time to find a windtunnel with smoke generator. Better yet, a smoke generator that attaches to the side of our cars for our own street driving testing, like all those vid cams stuck on cars for youtube runs. Can we assume that rusty body is just for prototype use and is not intended to be rebuilt into a Team fiatfactory street terror?

Lemons race X Carl,

$150 rolling chasiis with engine / trans, not so pretty bodywork, but still a basis for a serious racecar, it has a very sound rust and damage free chassis.

bare metaled to get all the bog / putty off, etch primed (applied with a roller) high Zinc content grey primer (also appled with a roller) so I had a clean canvas to start with.

Yarn will work and your outside rear view mirror might catch the action. Yet another distraction to have you run off the road along with your air/fuel meter and every X owner's angst at the temperature gauge.

Yes it did but they were functionless. They were very nicely integrated into the body below the stock side vents (which had been deleted) but the driver side vented to the gas tank well and the passenger side vented into the spare tire bay.

How weird. Why would one go through that kind of trouble?
