So, I put the new alternator in today, and found that the one in there was not old - turns out I replaced it last Sept (no recollection of that), also turns out I opted for exactly the same (new) unit this time. The upside of that is that RockAuto will warranty it, so I get my money back.
This one is definitely charging properly. approx 14v at idle, about 13 when the cooling fans kick in.
