Hi guys,
For those of you following on my saga that started in June, I lost the engine. Bust after months of research and ordering parts, the rebuild has started. The builder removed the engine on Friday and it goes to the machine shop this week to start putting her back together. The...
So I have a stock '88 that the original owner did the Brown Wire mod before I purchased it from him. Everything seems to work well except yes the electric windows seem pretty slow moving and the low beams of the headlights seem rather dim although the high beams are pretty good.
Was doing a...
Hi. I'm new here from the UK. Just trying to navigate my way around this forum so I'll introduce myself properly another day.
My recently bought X1/9 is not without its issues. My clock works but the main live feed is dead. All the fuses are correct and present.
Does anyone have a wiring...
With all of the electrical upgrades I have just completed, I had hoped to wrap everything up in a nice bow just in time for Christmas by installing the GM alternator. Installation was easy and painless. My results are not what I was expecting, however.
I am getting a "good reading" of 12.3...
I've searched for and found a number of posts demonstrating this mod but most of the links to a wiring diagram are not working. The most often referred-to link is missing:

Anyone have a diagram available? This would be...
Power Distribution Bus Bar (Final Design)
OK, finally finished the power distribution bus bar. I started out with a panel pass-thru post but the number of separate taps from that one post soon made it less than optimal. So I found a four position bus bar on eBay and installed it. It sits on...
Since my re-spray has gone from the estimated two weeks to nearly two months now, I'm running out of projects I can do at home.
I like the idea of insertable relay wiring harnesses as recommended by Bob Brown. So I made one for my wipers. I pulled apart my wiper motor and assembly to clean...
Can someone help me. I had a 55 amp alternator on my car. I put a Camaro alternator on my car it puts out 105 amp. It makes my lights brighter and my system run a lot better. but my wipers still have this problem. Please watch this video I made .

I tried a relay...
Based on the schematic provided by Bob Brown, I installed relays in the power window circuit on my '86.
First for reference, here's Bob's schematic:
Here's what the final product looks like on the passenger (R) side:

And on the driver (L) side...
There is the summary of my electronic speedometer conversion.
I used a speedometer from a Fiat Punto MK1 and European X cluster who integrate oil pressure gauge, also speedometer sensor from Volkswagen.

I used the "Speedo Healer" for the...
What takes forever and sometimes needs a little help to reach the top? The power windows on most X1/9s. I thought this was a problem I needed to live with until yesterday. After installing a little wiring harness with 4 relays, my windows are now the fastest in the East.

I was thinking about rlingren's recent tale of woe involving a burned ignition switch... and the pain that a burned ignition switch wire causes me... and I find myself wondering whether there's a better way.
There's a blue-black wire from the ignition switch to the fusebox that carries all...
These two are neighbors so I'll use one post to cover the upgrade I did to the alternator supply/power wire and the hard start relay that many here have fitted.
Alternator Supply/Power Wire Upgrade
On my '86 w/o AC, I found a Bosch 65A alternator. I was expecting a 55A unit because I think...
The Leiszig windshield wiper mod was the first mod I saw after joining XWeb about four years ago, and I immediately saved it as a Favorite.
So now it comes time to implement it. I think this drawing is the final, I need to check and verify that:
Taking a page from Bob Brown's book, I set...
I had intentions of implementing Bob Brown's patented and improved Brown Wire Mod, but when I got into it, the hard part was getting the addditional wire to seat nicely in the four-prong junction fitted to the front edge of the later cars ('84 and up) ATC fuse box. Not to mention that these are...
Hi,
Since I had (have) the engine out of my X I thought I would try out the alternator mod everyone raves about. I thought I would share what I did thus far - since the engine is not in the car I have not completed the electricals just yet.
You can see all of the pics here...
Found this while searching for Vanagon related stuff, it would be a good drop-in solution for anyone who isn't too handy with electrical to solve a weak starter solenoid circuit.

The price is pretty good...
It turns out the 74' needed an alternator as the one that came with the car was never working.. properly, the lack of an alternator light with the ignition switch on should have been more than a clue as problem.
Resulting in a dead battery.. A quick DVM check with a newly charged battery...
